New openings, cultural milestones and community initiatives are making headlines across Abu Dhabi this week. Here's our roundup of the updates you might have missed. 

Distrikt Social - Saadiyat Island’s New Neighbourhood Restaurant

Start your morning with speciality coffee, catch up over lunch, get some work done or meet friends for evening drinks at Distrikt Social. Opening on 29 July on Saadiyat Island, the new all-day dining spot will also feature co-working areas and pet-friendly seating, so your four-legged companion doesn’t have to miss out. 

The menu will feature dishes including Hokkaido Honey Toast, tuna tostadas, chicken tacos and Basque cheesecake, the restaurant will be open daily from 6am to midnight.

Zayed National Museum shortlisted for World Architecture Festival 2026 in Global Competition

Just months after opening its doors, Zayed National Museum is already gaining international recognition. The Saadiyat Island landmark has been shortlisted in the Completed Buildings - Culture category at the 2026 World Architecture Festival, marking a proud moment for the capital. 

If you've already visited, you'll know architecture is a big part of the experience. The five falcon-inspired towers, landscaped galleries and Al Liwan (the museum's light-filled central space) were designed by Foster + Partners to reflect the UAE's landscape while creating spaces for exhibitions, talks and cultural events. 

We'll find out if Zayed National Museum takes home the award when winners are announced in November. 

Neighbr launches a new way to rent household items 

A new UAE platform called Neighbr is making it easier to rent everyday items from people in your own community.

From tools and furniture to everyday essentials, Neighbr lets you rent out items you already own. It also helps others find what they need without having to buy new.

Putting something up for rent takes less than a minute, with AI helping you create a listing just by uploading a photo. All users are ID-verified too, so you know who you're renting from.

Cool Bus Shelter Initiative

The capital's summer heat is at its peak, and during the UAE's mandatory midday break, outdoor work stops between 12:30pm and 3pm to help protect workers from extreme temperatures. To support workers during this time, The UAE Lottery has partnered with SmartLife Foundation to launch the Cool Bus Shelter initiative, running until 8 September.

The initiative brings air-conditioned buses closer to labour sites, creating a space where workers could step away from the heat, rest and recharge during their break. They also receive refreshments, cold towels and portable neck fans to help them stay comfortable throughout the day.

Cultural Heritage law in the UAE

The next time you visit a historic fort, museum or archaeological site in the UAE, you could be seeing places that are better protected for future generations thanks to a new draft law. The new rules also expand the definition of cultural heritage to include digital archives, whilst introducing stricter penalties for heritage-related offences.

Books in the city  

Books in the City is bringing reading into everyday spaces across Abu Dhabi and Al Ain - from cafes and parks, to malls and heritage sites. 

Around 45 locations across Abu Dhabi and Al Ain will be part of the initiative. Activities include Take a Book, Leave a Book community book exchanges, NovelBrew where you can access digital libraries by scanning a QR code, and weekly reading clubs.

Look out for Meead, a pop-up at cultural and heritage sites where you can pick up a mystery book and discover your next read. You can also join the Offline Reading Club every Saturday from 10am to 12 noon to read, unplug and connect with other book lovers, plus you’ll also receive a complimentary coffee.

Abu Dhabi ranked among the world's top 10 cities for customer service

A new study by MoneySuperMarket has ranked Abu Dhabi among the world's top 10 cities for customer service. The ranking analysed more than 100,000 online reviews across 107 cities, with 55.3% of reviews for Abu Dhabi highlighting friendly staff and excellent service. 

The capital was the only GCC city to make the list, joining destinations including Edinburgh, Hanoi, Paris, Dublin, Montreal and Vienna. 

Romeo and Juliet at the Cultural Foundation

If Romeo and Juliet is one of your favourite classics, you’ve probably never seen it told like this. 

This September, Shakespeare’s iconic story comes to Abu Dhabi with a flamenco twist. The Barcelona Flamenco Ballet brings the page to the stage, trading spoken dialogue for live music and expressive dance.

The deep family conflict, the romance, and the tragic ending will play out entirely through movement, from intense group scenes that show the fighting families, to quiet moments between the two lovers.
