WeRide and Uber launch the Middle East’s first fully driverless commercial rides
Fully driverless robotaxis are now officially operating on Abu Dhabi streets, and yes, you can book one on Uber. It’s the first time anywhere outside the United States that completely driverless rides are running on the Uber platform, and it’s all kicking off right here in the capital.
WeRide, the autonomous driving tech giant, has joined forces with Uber to launch Level 4 driverless robotaxi services in Abu Dhabi. There’s no specialist inside the vehicle, no safety driver, nothing. Just you, the car and the ride.
The first phase of public commercial operations has begun on Yas Island. Passengers can now get matched with a WeRide Robotaxi when booking UberX or Uber Comfort, or they can use Uber’s new Autonomous category, which is the platform’s first dedicated driverless ride option anywhere in the world.
Abu Dhabi is the first city in the Middle East to bring fully driverless commercial robotaxis to the public, backed by the world’s first city-level driverless permit outside the US. The project is endorsed by Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Centre and operated in partnership with Tawasul.
It is a major moment in the UAE’s long-term vision for smart mobility, and it builds on WeRide’s four-year head start in autonomous vehicle deployment across the capital.
WeRide currently has more than 100 robotaxis in the region and plans to scale into the thousands over the coming years. With the new permit and improved vehicle utilisation, the service is on track to reach sustainability targets and build a full-scale autonomous network in Abu Dhabi.
