Etihad Rail fines: Here’s what you need to know before boarding

With Etihad Rail’s passenger service now connecting Abu Dhabi and Fujairah, you can now explore the UAE by train, taking in new views along the way while travelling between the two emirates. Before you step onboard, it’s worth knowing the rules, as some everyday habits could land you with a fine.

From putting your feet on seats to blocking train doors, Etihad Rail has listed a range of passenger violations, with penalties ranging from AED 200 to AED 10,000 depending on the offence. 


AED 200 fines

  • Putting your feet on train seats

  • Littering on trains or within related premises

  • Travelling without a valid ticket, including presenting a ticket issued under the name of another person

  • Fare evasion or using discounted tickets without eligibility

  • Sitting in reserved seats without authorisation

  • Travelling in a higher class than your ticket allows

  • Carrying prohibited or restricted materials

  • Failing to follow instructions from Etihad Rail personnel

  • Entering trains or stations while intoxicated

  • Bringing or consuming alcoholic beverages onboard


AED 500 fines 

  • Smoking or vaping in prohibited areas - including trains and stations.

  • Disruptive, abusive, threatening or intimidating behaviour

  • Causing delays to train services

  • Boarding or leaving a train while it is moving or positioned between stations

  • Commercial filming or photography without prior written authorisation from Etihad Rail

  • Possessing, consuming, supplying or dealing in controlled substances


AED 5,000 fines

  • Blocking or interfering with train doors

  • Opening train doors while the train is moving or without permission

  • Misusing emergency alarms, brakes or safety equipment

  • Throwing objects from trains or station platforms

  • Trespassing on railway land

  • Damaging trains, stations or railway property

  • Misusing emergency exits


Fines can reach AED 10,000

Etihad Rail says offences not specifically listed in its schedule may still attract fines between AED 100 and AED 10,000, depending on the seriousness of the violation.


Here are a few other rules worth remembering before your journey:

  • Children under 14 must travel with an accompanying adult

  • Children aged between 0 and 17 can take advantage of discounted fares, while infants aged 0 to 2 can travel free when seated on an accompanying adult’s lap

  • Strollers are permitted for parents with children and as long as they are foldable.

  • Wheelchairs and approved medical equipment are permitted, subject to Etihad Rail’s booking requirements

  • Bicycles, scooters, e-scooters and other personal means of transport are not permitted onboard

  • Bringing or consuming alcoholic beverages onboard is prohibited
