Basketball isn’t just visiting Abu Dhabi anymore - it’s putting down roots.
The National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi have confirmed a long-term extension of their partnership, meaning more NBA games, more fan experiences, and a major new chapter for grassroots basketball in the capital.
This also includes the launch of the NBA Global Academy in Abu Dhabi - a world-class training and education hub that will position the city as the global centre of the NBA’s elite youth development programme. It’s a big move, and one that signals Abu Dhabi’s ambition to be more than just a host city for major sporting events.
Set to run year-round, the NBA Global Academy will bring together top high-school-age players from the UAE, the Middle East and around the world. Think elite coaching, academic support and a clear pathway for young talent looking to take the sport seriously (whether that’s at university level or beyond).
Importantly, the programme isn’t just focused on international prospects. Local boys will have access to elite development pathways, while girls’ basketball will continue to be supported through dedicated training initiatives.
If you’re here for the live action, you’re in luck. The partnership extension confirms that NBA Global Games will continue to return to Abu Dhabi, with future preseason match-ups to be announced soon.
Past editions have already delivered sold-out nights at Etihad Arena, with fans packing the venue to watch teams like the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers up close.
One of the most interesting parts of this announcement is how much focus remains on the community side of the game.
Since 2022, NBA youth programmes in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain have already reached more than 20,000 children, and that number is set to rise. Jr. NBA and Jr. WNBA leagues are expanding, with plans to roll out more leagues over the next few years - creating more chances for kids to play, learn and fall in love with the sport.
Abu Dhabi will also continue to host international youth tournaments, building on previous showcases held at New York University Abu Dhabi, where elite academies from Africa, Europe, Australia and the US have competed in the capital.
More details on upcoming games, academy timelines and fan events are expected to be announced soon.
