Experiences in Abu Dhabi, for every resident and visitor.

Best things to do in Abu Dhabi

Whether you've just moved to the capital, you've lived here for years, or you're planning a visit, Abu Dhabi is packed with experiences that deserve a place on your list. Some are world-famous landmarks, others are places locals return to time and time again, but every one of them shows a different side of the city.

This isn't a list of every attraction in Abu Dhabi. It's a collection of the places we'd genuinely recommend to our friends and family. The places we keep going back to, the restaurants we love booking, the beaches we always end up at and the experiences that remind us why we love living here.

Sightseeing, the Abu Dhabi way

Best things to do in Abu Dhabi

1. Marvel at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of those places that never loses its wow factor. The white marble, intricate floral details and reflective pools are stunning at any time of day, but if you can, plan your visit for late afternoon.

You'll experience the mosque in daylight, at sunset and once it's illuminated after dark - all in one visit.

Entry is free, and whether you join a guided tour or simply wander round by yourself, it's somewhere you'll want to take your time. If you've got friends or family visiting, we'd always recommend making this your first stop before heading to nearby Qasr Al Watan or Emirates Palace.

ADR Tip: Arrive around an hour before sunset for the best experience and some incredible photos.

Times: Saturday to Thursday, 9am–10pm. Friday, 9am–12pm and 3pm–10pm (hours may vary during Ramadan and public holidays).

Price: Free.

2. Wander beneath the dome at Louvre Abu Dhabi

You'll probably recognise the famous floating dome before anything else. As sunlight filters through the intricate roof, it creates the museum's famous 'Rain of Light' - one of the city's most photographed spots.

Inside, you'll discover everything from ancient artefacts to works by Picasso and Van Gogh, all displayed in a way that's easy to explore.

Once you've finished, don't rush off. Grab a coffee overlooking the water or book lunch at Fouquet's before continuing your day around Saadiyat Cultural District.

ADR Tip: Give yourself at least three hours - there's far more to see than most people expect.

Times: Tuesday to Sunday, 10am–6.30pm. Closed Mondays.

From the moment you walk into the Great Hall, you'll understand why it's one of Abu Dhabi's most impressive landmarks. The enormous chandeliers, intricate detailing and vast marble interiors are incredible, while the exhibitions offer a fascinating look at the UAE's history and governance.

One of the rooms features all the gifts the UAE has been offered by other countries’ heads of state, and includes books, trinkets, and artifacts.

ADR Tip: Stay for the Palace in Motion evening light show if you're visiting later in the day.

Falcons have played an important role in Emirati culture for centuries, and this is your chance to see that tradition up close. During the guided tour, you'll go behind the scenes of the world's largest falcon hospital, where you'll see how these incredible birds are cared for, visit the treatment rooms and learn why falcons remain such an important part of life in the UAE. It's fascinating, even if you've never had an interest in birds before.

The highlight for most people is getting the chance to hold a falcon and take a photo, but you'll also visit the free-flight aviary and hear stories about the history of falconry in the region. It's one of those experiences that's uniquely Abu Dhabi and unlike anything you'll find elsewhere in the UAE.

50. Say yes to something new

If there's one thing we've learnt from living in Abu Dhabi, it's that the city never stands still.

Every month brings a new restaurant, exhibition, attraction, concert or event, which means there's always another reason to get out and explore. So whether it's finally booking that kayak tour, trying a new foodie spot you've been talking about for months, or visiting a museum you've somehow never made it to, make this the year you tick something new off your list.

After all, the best thing about Abu Dhabi isn't just the places you can visit - it's that there's always another experience waiting around the corner.

ADR Tip: Bookmark this guide and come back to it whenever you're planning your next weekend.
