Abu Dhabi’s cultural scene is continuing to grow, with plans now revealed for Dar Al Funoon Abu Dhabi, a massive new performing arts venue coming to Saadiyat Island.
Dar Al Funoon Abu Dhabi, meaning “House of the Arts”, is a massive new project designed by the late Frank Gehry. It’s locked in for a 2030 opening near the Saadiyat Cultural District, joining an already incredible lineup of the capital’s biggest cultural institutions.
If the name sounds familiar, Gehry is also the master architect behind the upcoming Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. The early models and renderings for Dar Al Funoon already show that same bold, highly sculptural style his buildings are famous for. Visually, we think it looks incredibly cool - featuring a flowing, billowing fabric-like exterior that appears to cascade over the structure. It’s built to be transparent, letting you see right into the building so you feel connected to the creative energy inside before you even step through the doors.
And this isn’t a far-off concept announcement either. Groundworks on the project have officially commenced, with the venue set to become a year-round, 365-day home for live performance in Abu Dhabi.
So, what do we know so far?
According to details shared during a recent project review attended by Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the venue will include a 2,000-seat multipurpose performance hall, a 3,500-seat open-air amphitheatre, a 400-seat studio theatre and a dedicated jazz venue, bringing the total capacity across the site to more than 6,000 guests.
Inside, you can expect everything from opera and ballet to theatre performances, jazz nights and international live productions, along with artistic residencies, touring partnerships and cultural collaborations throughout the year.
It feels like another major step in Abu Dhabi’s bigger cultural vision for Saadiyat Island. Over the past few years, the district has steadily transformed into one of the region’s heaviest arts hubs. It is already home to Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Bassam Freiha Art Foundation, with Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi all actively forming part of the wider masterplan.
There’s still a lot we don’t know, including specific construction updates and future ticket info, but based on the jaw-dropping architectural renders alone, Dar Al Funoon Abu Dhabi looks set to become one of the capital's most visually striking new landmarks.
Stay tuned for further updates as more details are revealed.
